In 1992, Microsoft released the Version 1.0 of the Microsoft Access Database application for use with the Windows
desktop operating system. The first version of Access was replaced in 1993 with Access Version 1.1 with improved compatibility
with the other Microsoft Office suite of productivity applications. Version 1.1 also offered an Independent Development Environment
(IDE) for programmers to develop code with the Access BASIC programming language.
Version 1.1 programming code contained several bugs and very spotty performance. 1992 was a very busy year for Microsoft.
The company also released the Windows 3.1 operating system plus Microsoft Office 4.3 Pro later in they year. This suite of
business applicatons included Excel, Word, and PowerPoint as well as Access Version 2.0. The updated version of Microsoft Office
required more memory and better hardware management provided by the Windows 3.1 operating system.
Microsoft Access proved to be an excellent desktop database appplication for small to medium sized businesses (SMBs) who
needed a relatively low budget database solution. When Microsoft Access was first released, harddrive capacity was less than 100
megabytes (MB) on the PC computers. Also, a business document file was usually in the size range of hundreds (not thousands) of bytes.
With the introduction of Microsoft Access the capacity for database size grew enormously. A Microsoft Access database could become
very large, exceeding 10MB. Such a large sized database created a potential problem in the performance area due to low computer RAM managed
via the operating system. As a result of the large Access database development data loss did occur as well as data corruption that literally put a
throttle on how Microsoft Access Version 2.0 could be used as a development tool.
Microsoft Access Version 2.0 was a much improved application with an a greater variety of features which increased the software's
popularity among both programming developers and everyday users. The main drawback to implementing Microsoft Access was the time,
effort, and considerable patience necessary to design and develop an application. Unfortunately, the early versions of Access were not
considered intuitive nor user friendly.
Microsoft released the new Windows 95 Operating System in 1995. Windows 95 became the underpinning for Microsoft to move to a 32 bit
