About Texas

Texas was admitted as a state into the United States on December 29, 1845, making it the 28th State in the union. Texas borders on the country of Mexico and has a area of 268,601 square miles, making it the second largest state (only Alaska is larger). Texas also has a signicant coastline of 367 miles. The capital city is Austin, currently the fourth largest city in the state. The 2013 Census population of Texas is 26,448,193 making it the second most populous state.

The first European to discover what is now Texas was Spanish explorer Alonso Álvarez de Piñeda, in 1519. Many Spanish adventurers migrated to Mexico, then to Texas attempting to find the mythical golden "Seven Cities of Cibola". In 1820, Moses Austin, an American, was granted land in Texas from the Spanish government. Texas grew to be considered a very independent area and was an independent nation from 1836 to 1845, when it became a state.
