Using Microsoft Access Layouts
You don't need to become an expert Access programmer to get an excellent Access database for your company. The following information shows how complex an Access application can be and what to consider when building an Access database program.

Switching Between a Stacked and a Tabular Layout
Access 2007 makes it easy to switch between a stacked and a tabular layout. Here are the steps:
- Select the control layout by clicking the orange layout selector at the top-left corner of the layout. This selects all objects in the layout.
- On the Arrange tab, choose the desired layout in the Control Layout group. Or right-click the control layout, select Layout, then pick the layout you want. Access rearranges the controls into the selected layout type.
Splitting One Control Layout into Two Form Layouts
Sometimes you may want to split a single control layout into two layouts. Use this procedure:
- Hold Shift and select the controls you want to move to the new layout.
- On the Arrange tab, select the appropriate layout for the selected controls (Tabular or Stacked). Or right-click the selection, choose Layout, and pick the layout you want.
Removing a Form Layout
If you no longer want to work with controls as a layout, you can remove the layout entirely. This does not remove any controls; each control becomes a separate object. To remove a layout:
- Use the orange layout selector to select the entire layout.
- Right-click and select Layout > Remove (see Figure 5.29). Or click Remove in the Control Layout group on the Layout tab. The layout is removed and the selector disappears.
Getting to Know Split Forms
Access 2007 provides a split form that shows your data in both Form view and Datasheet view simultaneously. Without any code, the split form ties both views to the same data source and keeps them synchronized. Selecting a field in one view selects the same field in the other. In Figure 5.30, company information appears in Datasheet view at the top and Form view at the bottom. Create a split form in three steps:
- Open the table or query you want in Datasheet view, or select it in the Navigation Pane.
- Click the Create tab.
- Choose the Split Form tool in the Forms group. Access creates the form and displays it in Layout view.
Be aware of these split form properties (found on the form's property sheet):
- Split Form Orientation — Choose whether the datasheet is on the top, bottom, left, or right.
- Split Form Splitter Bar — Set to Yes to show a splitter bar between the two sections.
- Save Splitter Bar Position — Controls whether Access remembers the splitter position.
- Split Form Size — Sets the size of the Form view portion of the split form.
- Split Form Printing — Choose whether Datasheet or Form view prints when sending to the printer.
