For The Microsoft Access Programmer - Using Control Properties

What Control Properties Are Available In Access, and Why Should You Use Them?

Just as reports have properties, so do controls. You can change most control properties at design time or at runtime, allowing you to easily build flexibility into your reports. For example, certain controls are visible only when specific conditions are true.

The Control's Format Properties

You can modify several formatting properties of the selected objects using the ribbon. If you prefer, you can set all the properties in the property sheet. The following are most of the Format properties of a report control:

  • Caption: Sets the visible text for labels and command buttons. You can use up to 2,048 characters to create clear, descriptive labels for your users.
  • Hyperlink Address: Stores the network path (UNC) or web address (URL) for clickable elements. Available for hyperlink controls, command buttons, images, and labels.
  • Hyperlink SubAddress: Points to a specific location within the document referenced by the Hyperlink Address. Think of it as directing users to a particular section of a larger document.
  • Decimal Places: Specifies how many digits appear after the decimal point in numeric values, helping maintain consistency in financial and measurement data.
  • Hide Duplicates: Eliminates repetitive values in your report's Detail section, creating cleaner outputs when consecutive records contain identical information.
  • Can Grow, Can Shrink: Lets controls expand vertically to fit all data when Can Grow is enabled, while Can Shrink removes empty space when fields contain no data, perfect for multi-line address fields.
  • Left, Top, Width, Height: Determine the exact positioning and dimensions of your controls, giving you pixel-perfect placement on your reports.
  • Back Style, Back Color: Control transparency and background coloring. Set Back Style to Transparent to let the report show through, or Normal to display the color specified in Back Color.
  • Reading Order: Manages how text flows visually, especially important for multilingual applications. Options include Context (default), Left-to-Right, and Right-to-Left.
  • Scroll Bar Align: Determines where vertical scrollbars appear, working with language settings to handle right-to-left or left-to-right text direction needs.
